Ledger.com/Start Guide

Ledger.com/Start — Beginner Setup & Wallet Onboarding

Welcome! This friendly, practical guide helps you move from “unboxed” to “ready to transact” using the workflow commonly referred to as Ledger.com/Start. Your hardware wallet keeps private keys offline, while the companion app, Ledger Live, lets you manage accounts, check balances, and approve transactions. The steps below focus on clarity and safety, so first-time users can onboard without stress and returning users can double-check best practices.

Start Setup

1) Unbox and verify contents

Inside the box you’ll typically find the device, a cable, and recovery sheets. Inspect packaging for tampering. Your device should power on and display prompts directly on its screen—your first indication that critical interactions will always happen on-device.

2) Initialize the device and set a PIN

Power on and choose “Set up as new.” Create a strong 6–8 digit PIN. This PIN protects access to signing functions. Keep it private, avoid shoulder surfing, and don’t reuse PINs from other devices.

3) Back up the recovery phrase (seed)

The device will display 24 words, one at a time. Write them down on paper or a durable metal backup—offline only. This phrase is the only way to recover funds if your device is lost or replaced. Never store it in cloud notes or photos. Never type it into apps or websites—including Ledger Live.

4) Visit the official flow often described as Ledger.com/Start

On your computer or phone, follow the official download path to install Ledger Live. Double-check you’re on the authentic site, then download for your OS. Install, launch the app, and optionally enable the app password to add a lock screen.

5) Pair device and add accounts

Connect via USB (desktop) or Bluetooth (mobile, when supported). In Ledger Live, add accounts (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). The app indexes the blockchain so you can see balances; the device stays offline and signs when required. Always confirm addresses and totals on the device screen before approving.

6) Test a tiny receive/send

Practice with a small amount first. Copy the receive address from Ledger Live, then verify the same address on your device. For sending, double-check the destination in the app and on the device screen, fees, and network.

Safety checklist

Why the device screen matters

The device screen is isolated from your computer/phone OS, making it more reliable for final confirmation. If the device shows something different from the app, cancel immediately.

FAQ

Do I ever enter the recovery phrase in Ledger Live?

No. The 24 words are for the device only and offline backup. Ledger Live never needs them.

Can I restore on a new device?

Yes. Choose “Restore from recovery” on the new device and carefully enter the 24 words on the device, not in any app.

What if I forget my app password?

Reset the app and reconnect your device. Funds remain on-chain and recoverable by your device + recovery phrase.
